Agricultural Regions

Idaho's eight major farming and ranching regions.

Where Idaho Grows

Idaho’s agriculture is shaped by its diverse geography. Each region has distinct soil types, climate conditions, water sources, and agricultural traditions.

Magic Valley

Centered on Twin Falls and Jerome, the Magic Valley is Idaho’s most concentrated agricultural zone. Irrigation from the Snake River transformed this semi-arid landscape into one of the West’s most productive farming areas.

  • Leading sectors: Dairy, potatoes, sugar beets, grain, beans, cattle feedlots.
  • Key processors: Glanbia, Chobani, Amalgamated Sugar.
  • Key counties: Twin Falls, Jerome, Gooding, Minidoka, Cassia, Lincoln.

Treasure Valley

The Treasure Valley surrounds Boise and extends west through Nampa and Caldwell. Despite rapid urbanization, it remains agriculturally productive.

  • Leading sectors: Hops, onions, corn, hay, mint, wine grapes, nursery stock, cattle.
  • Key counties: Canyon, Ada, Gem, Owyhee, Payette.

Palouse

The Palouse stretches across rolling hills in north-central Idaho. Its deep loess soils are among the world’s most fertile dryland farming soils.

  • Leading sectors: Winter wheat, spring wheat, dry peas, lentils, barley, canola, chickpeas.
  • Key counties: Latah, Nez Perce, Lewis, Clearwater.

Eastern Idaho / Upper Snake River Valley

Eastern Idaho’s high elevation, volcanic soils, and Snake River irrigation make it one of the nation’s premier potato-growing areas.

  • Leading sectors: Potatoes, barley, wheat, hay, cattle, sugar beets.
  • Key counties: Bonneville, Bingham, Madison, Jefferson, Fremont, Power, Bannock, Caribou.

Camas Prairie

A high-elevation agricultural basin in central Idaho with productive dryland and irrigated farming.

  • Leading sectors: Grain, hay, cattle ranching.
  • Key counties: Camas, Blaine (northern portions).

Clearwater Basin

Agriculture concentrates along river valleys and lower-elevation benches in north-central Idaho.

  • Leading sectors: Cattle ranching, hay, timber, small grains.
  • Key counties: Idaho, Clearwater, Lewis.

Salmon River Country

The most remote agricultural area in Idaho, dominated by ranching on mountainous public and private rangeland.

  • Leading sectors: Cattle and sheep ranching, hay production in valley bottoms.
  • Key counties: Lemhi, Custer.

Southwest Idaho / Owyhee Country

Vast open rangelands, sagebrush-steppe, and irrigated pockets along river corridors.

  • Leading sectors: Cattle ranching, hay, alfalfa.
  • Key counties: Owyhee, Elmore.
